It is now hard to believe that some time ago yoga was considered wired and sectarian in Russia and some people were even persecuted and even paid for it with their job for advocating and practicing it. Today more and more Russians get hooked on to this Indian practice of physical and spiritual self-discipline. Lots of new yoga centers are being opened in the Former Soviet Union. Yoga schools like Iyengar, Ashtanga or meditative Kundalini yoga are available. While the majority considers asanas as just physical activity, spiritual yoga practices are approached as something weird. Russians like to joke that hobbies of each new countrys president encourage the development of a particular sport. For instance Dmitry Medvedev, who practices yoga is said to inspire country's nationals to follow this ancient Indian art of exercise.
