It is not easy to become a sled(or sledge) dog driver even though it looks so nice and relaxing to stand on narty and enjoy the sounds of dog-team rushing you through the spectacular landscape of the Far East. Russian mushers are called kayur. Driving a sledge a kayur balances his weight and transfers it from one leg to another as well as controls the sledge down hills and around corners. It is very important to use the brake correctly in order to slow yourselves down not injuring the dogs in the process. One has to be physically fit and strong as sledging is a strenuous and physical activity. Uusual sledge dog breeds are Siberian Husky, Alaska Malamute, the Samoyede, Kamchatka Laika theChukotka Laika. They are all hard working and resistant to very low temperatures. Dog sled teams are packed together with great care. Putting a dog sled team together involves picking leader dogs, point dogs, swing dogs and wheel dogs.
